Road trip to IL
I'm going on a road trip to IL tomorrow until Sunday and I was wondering if there are any road trip tips that I should look into to max out my mpg , just looking for helpful tips that may make my trip a little bit cheaper in the fuel department . I know in the past I've heard of people adding a little more air into the tires , topping off the fluids and obviously adjusting the driving just looking for tips because I would like and should be able to see the 20's on this trip without a problem.
Presently I have done a k&n drop in filter, the front end has been looked at , it's a little off but not terrible , just changed the oil, and all the fluids are topped off . Only thing I haven't tried is adding air to the tires which I've never done so what would be a safe amount of any at all ? If anyone here has gone to IL from MI it's a lot of highway 55-65+ speeds not many stops either .
Thanks

Before road trips, I make sure all my tires are pumped up to the max recommended pressure. Also, I make sure all of my fluids are topped off and looking good, as well as all my lights are in working order.
The front end on my blazer could use an alignment as well (just a little bit off.. Thanks Michigan roads!) That alone has dropped my usual 22 highway mpg down to about 19. Still not too bad.
There's times that I am able to achieve 23 mpg on the highway. I accelerate nice and easy (below 2500 rpm unless the entrance ramp is short), I set the cruise at 69-72mph, and just chill. I'm fairly impressed at my mpg on a recent trip. When I got home, I had 214 miles on the trip-meter, and still at about half tank.

I keep tire pressure 10% less than the max inflation on the tire. ie if it says 44psi max, I run 'em at 40psi, all the time. Don't go by the sticker in the door, unless you want a mushy ride, and short tire life.
