what is the most common reason for the service engine soon light to come on?

BTW i have a 1996 blazer 4x4

That's a loaded question...

Your best bet would be to run to an Autozone or Advanced Auto where they can scan the PCM and give you a print out of the codes that are present. Once you have these codes, post back up again and we'll try to help you determine what is wrong.
