Default Skid plate...?

So I have a 1998 LS 4x4 and I want off-roading this last weekend. Upon returning home, I realized my "skid plate" was torn to bits and I cannot find one to save my life. It's the plastic piece under my fan/motor that has an oil filter access cut out.

My question is, does anyone know where I can get another one? Or rather one that metal and not plastic? I'm tempted to make my own but I figured I'd ask here before I do that project

Thanks in advance
- Mike

I'd try a bone yard first.

LMC Truck have and list all the skid plates for all the years that use them. Should be PN# 29-9552 in LMC catalog #CST.47 $69.95

The plastic ones aren't really skid plates. More like wind deflectors. They won't stand up to any abuse. The real factory skid plates were either aluminum or carbon fibre, depending on the year.

Like Captain said, the best place to find them is a wrecker or pick-n-pull type place. If you find them, some models came with 3 skid plates covering the radiator, front diff, and transfer case. As long as they're from the same generation they should fit your truck. For the diff (center) plate you'll need to grab the front mounting brackets too.

LMC does list the composite skid plates. The only place you are likely able to find the metal ones will probably be a bone yard. That or a dealer and i'm sure they will be expensive there. Some models did not come with metal skid plates at all. My 02 ZR2 has composite and metal plates.

I've seen skid plates, both the metal and composite, on ebay before. But they're usually pretty expensive, and shipping is usually pretty high.

Like others have said, a junk yard is the best bet.

For those that would like to know; my middle skid plate Torx are............T40. I've read other threads that are now locked, mentioning T30, but no mention of T40. Strange. Maybe something to do with my 2002 being a late year production (no EGR valve)? Or, maybe just specific to a ZR2?

My buddy just picked up a metal one from our local u pull it for his '98 s10 pickup. He pulled it from either a '96 or '97 two door Jimmy. Bolted right on, looks great.
I have added it to my want list now.

What about just getting one fabricated? Like if someone like Scott Rod did it? Would that be cheaper than paying the ebay surcharge if you couldn't find a metal one at a junkyard?
