So, here I am, trying to get the starter out of my 1999 Jimmy (4WD, AT). I got the bolts out, and tried to remove it- It just won't come out! There is not enough room!!! It is caught up on the frame and tranny (I think, I don't remember...)
Yes, I've looked at the previous posts, and got ideas, but I just want to make sure before I waste more time on this...
-Can it be done? (just kidding, I hope...)
-Is it better to remove the wires off the front end first, before loosening the starter itself? If so, how do I squeeze in there?
-If the wires need to be removed, is it better to then rotate it 180* (forward/aft), so that the gear is in front, and get it out that way?
I was expecting this to be a relatively easy job- now just banging my head!
Thanks!

What you will want to do is first, Get her up on jack stands so you can remove the passenger side wheel ( for easy access ). After you pull the wheel , remove your 2-nut's that are on the starter silenoid to disconnect wiring. To pull the starter out the bottom just rotate, and tilt. It comes out easy once tilted and turned just right, so dont try to force anything. Also, be very careful with the silenoid nuts when removing. The silenoid get's brittle with age, and are notorius for the studs breaking off. I broke 2 of mine even though I sprayed on pb blaster. A new silenoid cost me $25 at a local alt./starter shop.
