Default Starting / Fuel issue

1996 Jimmy 4.3 Vortec, Starts, then immediately stalls. I can get it to start with starting fluid, then it stalls right out. I don't hear the fuel pump. Never really heard it before, but now I'm listening for it, of course. I put the key in the on position, get out and go near the left rear wheel and don't hear it. Fuel pump, end of story?

I don't have a fuel pressure gauge. I did take the cap off the gauge fitting and pressed on it with the key on, and it didn't seem to have any pressure.

I was checking on ebay to get an idea of cost, and saw they have some repair kits cheap. Any thoughts on that? After going through the effort to get to the fuel pump, might as well replace it, right? Although cost is an issue.

I was hoping that it might just be the fuel filter, but doubt it since I don't hear the pump. Sounds like the filter's a PITA, anyway. Maybe even more trouble than the pump. Tank is mostly full, unfortunately.

Thanks for any guidance that you can offer,

Tom

Check the fuses and relays just to be sure it isn't something simple. You can jumper the pump at the relay with a section of wire. If you still do not hear the pump or get pressure to the fuel pressure test port, then the pump is likely at fault and the next step would be to drop the fuel tank and test for power at the pump.

Didn't see a fuse labeled "fuel system" or anything similar. There's 3 relay's in the glove box, swapped them around and the horn always worked.

Thanks for your reply,

Tom

Try jumping power to the pump. If you don't hear it, then you are certain it;s a bad pump. Also make sure the ground off the pump to the frame rail is still good.
