Default Steering wheel repair

The plastic/vinyl covering on my 02 steering wheel has worn off on the upper left quadrant, leaving the foam underlay exposed. Has anyone tried recovering an area like this? What did you do and how did it work out?

I've seen DIY leather wraps, but none that looked factory. There are companies that provide a restoration service, but I can't imagine they're cheap.

Was thinking about brushing a coat or two of Rustoleum on the foam part. It's pretty thick.

Maybe spray-on bedliner?

The brush-on Rustoleum worked pretty well. it slickened up the wheel and should stop further deterioration. A second coat probably won't hurt and if I give it one I'll use satin instead of glossy.
