what can cause a timing retard??

"If you can't get cam retard to spec, you can remove the OEM hold down bracket and install one of these: Mr Gasket Part No. 1009 - Distributor Clamps"

This will make the distributor fully adjustable.

you can also take a dremel to the hold down bracket to widen the gap a bit giving you more rotation.

yeah. i was thinking' something like that when i realized that the bracket was not moving..
i have an old bracket from a 350 engine..

is there a trick to pull the bracket from the distributor?
the other thing that you sayd in the past reply.. that the timing chain may be stretched... so that's equal to $$...

i'll try to do by now the Bracket thing to stay close to Zero...

No real trick to remove the bracket... Put the distributor in a vice, open the bracket slightly to slide it off. Your SBC distributor hold down will work in place of the one in the link I posted. Just be careful when removing the distributor. I usually bump the starter until the rotor points to the "6" on the distributor housing, then pull it out. Then install it so the rotor points to the "6".
