The front diff exploded out when the chain started catching the case, so I was entertaining the idea of converting to 2wd but I was concerned that when I pulled the front diff I would have to pull the cv's or the'd just be hanging loose, and I didn't know if I needed the cv's for steering or suspension or to hold the wheel hub in the wheel. thanks for the advice, I really appreciate it.

usually what people do is actually remove the cv joint, but keep the end part that goes into your bearing. so basically just break or cut the cv joint at the joint part right behind the wheel, put it back into your bearing and re-tighten the nut. instant 2wd.

I did remove the front driveshaft from a Gand Cherokee, worked well for me, 8 bolts that's it!
Don't know if chev does the same?
