Any rear axle should last nearly forever with decent maintenance (considering wear only, not breakage). 300k or 400k miles is pretty common. But if you want to upgrade anyway, this is probably a good time. If you're thinking of replacing it with an 8.6" rear, I think they're getting pretty hard to find, so good luck.

It sounds like you did it right, and your pattern looks good.
Maybe you can put it on jackstands and run it to pinpoint where the noise is coming from? It helps to put the tip of a long screwdriver on the housing by each bearing, and press your ear against the handle. Obviously, you want to use extreme caution when doing that.

Does anyone have a zr2 posi that they don't want? How long will a posi in a zr2 last before rebuild?
I don't have a tool to set the backlash. I used the original shims so I figured that it should be fine since I used all the original gears.
