Default Winter is here and now I'm afraid to use 4x4 :(

Hey everyone, I have a 2000 with the 3 button 4x4:
Couple days ago I used my 4x4 and when the road was fine I turned it off...then I heard like a whirring/revving sound getting louder, then a huge clunk from the back end. It was like hitting a really rough pot hole too fast with one tire almost jarring. Anyways, I thought it WAS my tire, so I pulled over to check it, no probs, turned 4 wheel back on to get back on the road because I'm lazy then disengaged the 4x4 a bit down the road and the same thing happened again. There's a weird humming like something is revving up and then BAM.
Oh and possibly important - when I pressed the 2Hi, it had no trouble switching from the 4HI...a few blinks and then switch. Going from 2HI to 4HI, no problems at all, can hear it engage fine.

I'm afraid to turn it back on again for now, unfortunately we're getting a big snow storm right now haha (an hour from Toronto). Gotta make that dough :\

Any ideas, or somewhere to start?

THanks guys

Try engaging and disengaging at a dead stop, in park or neutral

All 4 tires must be the same size, have the same tire pressure, and the same brand of tire on all 4 corners is highly recommended. Basically, all 4 tires must have the exact same circumference.

this may sound like a weird question, but do you have disk or drums in the rear?
