Winterizing for Alaska
In January I will be moving to Alaska. I was wondering what all I should do to properly winterize my Blazer for the fridgid winters up there. I know I should run lightweigh oil (i.e. 5w-30), make sure my antifreeze is good, and occassionally run a fuel additive such as HEET or ISO-Heet, but is there anything else I should consider????
You will most definitely want an Engine Block Heater. You can plug it into a regular wall outlet, it will keep your engine (or something, I'm not sure of the specifics) from freezing. When I was younger we lived in Wyoming and had to get one for our cars/trucks, -40 will keep you from driving anywhere.
Also I would be really interested to know how the Blazer holds up in the cold...

I would say you DEFINITELY need a block heater & I recommend synthetic oil's specially for the transmission. I have heard of people with heater's on every thing engine, trans, radiator & cab it depends how far you want to go good luck.
Yeah, my Blazer already has a block heater. Good call on the tranny fluids. What would you say is the "best" performing battery for cold climates? I am due for a new one anyway.
Both of my in-laws have blazers (well one is a Trailblazer) and they live in the U.P. of Michigan where it dosen't get above 0 for most of January and their vehicles are doing just fine. Maybe I will luck out and find a house with a heated garage

I have always liked optima's on my 2 red top & I think you can get battery blankets to. I use to live in the U.P. my self in Gwinn just south of Marquette towing snowmobile's to copper harbor on the Keweenaw peninsula & I can tell you after 5 days with out starting it got down to 55 below I was the only one with no problem starting had to jump everyone else "they were ford's" haha that was do to synthetics & a good battery. I use Mobil 1 5w30 & amsoil with lucas for the transmission.
