Default wrong gas gauge reading.

hey guys!
just picked up a 98 blazer LS 4x4. when the tank is less than half full, it shoots itself
back up to full so I get a wrong reading. it's my first time owning a Chevy, and I've heard it's a common thing, but does anybody know EXACTLY what the issue is so I don't go around fixing all this stuff that's not my real issue.
thanks!

The best thing you can do is fill the tank, drive around one hundred miles or so, refill, then divide how many miles you drove by the amount of gas you put in. My jimmy has the same problem. I have heard a double dose of techron concentrate (the 20 gallon bottle) will help clean up the sending unit. I haven't had much luck with that. Unless you want to shell out the cash for a new fuel pump/sending unit. On these vehicles, the pump is the same as the sending unit.

the sending unit will not work with a cleaning i took the pump out of my 98 blazer ls, removed the sending unit and cleaned it as much as possible and it didnt do anything so dont waste time or money thinking it will, you either have to live with it, like most here have or shell out over 300 for a new pump
