4L60E Tranny Rebuild Thread

RE: Did you get your tranny back in?
Thanks for asking.
Update.
We took a look at it and I managed to break my pump. I'll get some pics. Based on the way it broke, I think I broke it when I dropped the tranny in frustration off the jack and onto the floor with the wrong torque converter in it, about a foot drop. The force shattered the pump rotor into three pieces. I got lucky, had I damaged the back of the pump body in the process it would have cost me $500 for a new pump. Instead I broke a $25 part, granted it is one of the most important parts of teh tranny. The pump rotor holds all teh vanes that move the tranny fluid throughout the entire tranny and cooling system.
In about 5 hours I'll be heading out to rebuild the pump, and drag the tranny back home again. So hopefuly by this time tomorrow I should be back up and running. Now I have to spend another 30 bucks on new tranny fluid.

RE: Did you get your tranny back in?
Due to another thread, it came to my attention that I never finished this thread.
I managed to get the tranny pump rotor replaced, got the correct torque converter, had to buy a new flexplate. I bent the old one trying to force the incorrect size troque converter into place.
Had I done my homework and compared the new to the old torque converter properly I would have know I had the wrong one.
You can see how much thicker the wrong one is in the below pic.
List of mistakes.
Dropped the tranny of the jack.
Failed to verify the new torque converter was the same size as the old one. Not even the bolt holes lined up. Off by 1/4" or so.
Results.
I am extremely pleased with the trannies performance now. She grabs hard and fast, holds gears longer and I can launch off the line. She gets up and moves. It'll hold passing gear to 85-90. Drop into 4th gear and I still have peddle left. Don't ask me how I know. I plead the 5th. While cruising 55mph my rpms are at 1650. Jump up to 70 and they jump up to 2000rpm.
Cost, with all my mistakes, new parts, tranny expert labor, and about 15 gallons of tranny fluid. Around $500. I took all my old clutch packs from the '00 4L60E and put them into my '87 700R4 which is a 60 degree bolt pattern. Teh clutches looked almost brand new and they had 102,000 miles on them. I was having issues witht he '87 700R4, turns out the valve body needed to be replaced. Cheaper to replace the valve body then fix the valves that were lose. While I had the tranny out, I swapped in the '00 clutch packs.

Nice write up. I did the same thing with my 4T60E for my Bonneville. That was fun to take apart. FWD!! Yep, best to get your hands on a ATSG manual.

RE: Did you get your tranny back in?
Agreeing with W2JGA. Also, I realized that my wife`s 01 Jimmy is right about at the same mileage that Hanr3`s was when the tranny failed. I think it is indeeda design flaw in the 4L60E in the 99+ model years. IMO,a truck tranny should not be failing at 100K miles, unless you are doing some serious ******* of your vehicle.
