I'm am going to surrender to the knowledge of you audio buffs out there, as I'm in need of some help lol. I found a guy here at school selling two 12" Platinum subwoofers. They're rated at 500W and 8 ohms. He also has a 4 channel Lanzar amp which I believe is rated for 4000W.

So I guess the question is, is it possible to wire only one of the subs to that amplifier without causing any issues? And if so, how can I do it?

Yes it's just fine to do so, but why only one? Also, the amp is a Lanzar Opti 4x400 D which is rated at 800watts, not 4000.

What you'll want to do is connect the one sub to the amp on a pair of channels bridged. In other words pick channels 1&2 or 3&4 and connect the wire that goes to the sub to the terminals on the amp in the fashion that the diagram on the amp says. Which means you put the + wire for the sub on the Ch. 1 or Ch. 3 + and put the - wire for the sub on the Ch. 2 or Ch. 4 - terminals. In order for it to work the channels have to be paired 1&2 or 3&4 and yes you can connect both subs to the amp bridged like that, one on the 1&2 channels and one on the 3&4 channels.

Here's a link to the manual for that amp as well. That should help out a lot with the specs and connections for you.

Now the amp is rated at 400wrms x 2 bridged into a 4 ohm load. Since the subs seem to be single 8 ohm coil subs you'll only get 200wrms, not 400wrms. It's really not a big deal, they'll work fine, just not as much power as they could possibly take. The good thing about that tho is that you won't need great big power wire to run it and it won't be super stressful on your electrical system like a bigger amp would be.

I only want to use one sub because I'd like to use the enclosure I already have. I built it over the summer to fit one 12" so I could keep some cargo space. However, up until now, I've only had a 10" in it.

Here's another question, right now I have a 500Wx2 bridgeable 4ohm amp, which do you think you think would be the better choice for this application?

 

It very well could be, at least to be sure you get more output. Have you bought the subs and amp yet? The Lanzar Opti amps aren't bad amps but I can't find any info on those subs, at all. How much is he wanting for the stuff? I ask because I may be able to recommend for you a brand new sub for the same or less money that will be MUCH better quality and perhaps fit your application much better if all you're really looking for is a new sub.

 

He's asking $75 for all of it. It has been for sale for a while though, so I'm thinking he may be pretty flexible on the price.

 

I guess that's not too shabby for all that stuff, but in my honest opinion, you could spend that $75 on one new good sub and be far better off. What is the amp you mentioned that's 500wx2 and what's your real budget like? I'd love to make you a better recommendation that I think you'd be happier with in the long run.

Well, here's a few suggestions that are right at your budget price.

This one is just a few dollars more than you mentioned, though it does have free shipping and it's a great sub.

I've personally used these before and they're great subs for the money.

And if you'd be willing to expand your budget a little for some Hand built in the USA super sweetness there's always the Fi X series subs or the SSA DCON which are both absolutely incredible.
