Hey everyone, I still havent broke down and purchased a chilton/haynes manual and I dont even know if they have this info in them. But Im looking for some sort of a wiring diagram from my 78 blazer. I want to put in a DIN unit instead of the shaft unit b/c I want to listen to cds. I hate to hack the dash. I unpluged the harness to see what had been done to the factory harness. And of course its rigged.
Only the rear speakers are hooked up and only one plays currently. I need to know what all the colors mean EXACTLY. Im 99% sure the top 8 that I listed are speaker wires since they have the same color with a blk stripe. The blue wire is cut, the blk is going to a ground near the fuse panel, red and yellow are also plugged into the fuse panel. I just want to hard wire my new headunit in there. So can I just run a power/grd from the battery straight to the unit and then just run my speaker wires? Just bypass all this crap? The speakers in the rear look like old house speakers and wire is just hanging there. I am only installing 2 rear speakers. Thanks

From what I have been reading online maybe I should just start from scratch. Run 1 wire straight from the battery to the cd player with an inline fuse, run a wire from ign in the fuse box to the cd player along with the dimmer wire, and run a ground all the way to the battery as well while im at it. THen just run my speaker wires.
But how did you guys get the new DIN unit to stay in its place? Is there some sort of bracket or install kit I can buy? Does anyone have any info on putting an DIN unit in an older blazer?

Since it is a 78 I would replace all of the speaker wires and just cut back the ones you have as far back into the dash as you can.
When you say the red and yellow are coming from the fuse panel, are they coming from the back of it or are they coming from the front like someone wedged the wires in with the fuse?
The black that is grounded near the fuse box, is the only thing that wire does is act as a ground for the stereo? If thats the case pull it as well.
The white, grey, green, and purple are the speaker wires which at this point don't matter because you should run new wires.
The blue wire, chances are at some point someone had an amp in there and that is the remenance os the remote wire. You could probably find the other end of it somewhere under the carpet.
As for new wiring you do not need a dimmer wire to the radio. There really is no reason to dim it at night I mean they really aren't all that bright.
For a new ground I would not go all the way back to the battery. I would clean up a piece of metal in the dash around the radio and ground it in there.
For a constant 12v you could go directly to the battery or you could find the radio fuse in the fuse panel and tap off of that wire.
For a switched 12v the easiest place to pick one up is in the ignition circuit wires going into the dash out of the steering column. A couple of pokes with a test light will find it and all you have to do is tap it.
Not sure what condition your dash is in but check Metra's website for a dash kit that will allow you to mount a new single din unit using the cage supplied with the radio.
If the red and yellow are jammed into the fuse panel with the fuse, ditch them. If they come from the back of the panel then test them, one should be a constant 12v and the other should be a switched 12v. If thats the case I would use them over running new wires.
