Scanners take a different type of antenna and connector. You can run both but will need a scanner antenna for it to be effective.

As far as cheap I use Radio Shack stuff and it works fine. I have an inverter to power it as they don't have DC models.

 

I have mine screwed straight into the body right ahead of the passenger side tail lamp. If you mount it to the swing away tire carrier, you need to ground it properly. I had mine there and had poor reception. Go here to find CB and scanner information and models:

fyi police scanners are illgeal to use in your truck. You can have them in your home but not a vehicle

it would be pointless to hook up a scanner to a CB antenna. You need a long antenna to pick up long wave lengths. Police band/emergency is shorter wavelength, which is why the 8'' rubberized antennas they usually come with can get you 10 miles or so of range on a good scanner. You can buy a 6ft antenna for most scanners and pick up aircraft communications, UHF...which have wavelengths up to 1m...

Basically, anything over 3ft is over kill for a scanner (they make the 6fts to get past your body mass)...CBs use the large whips for a reason...they need em.

As far as mounting the CB with dual antennas..you need a co-phasing harness. Radioshack should sell em, as should Firestick antennas online. The key with two antennas is that both wire runs need to be the same length, and they need to be a specific distance apart (at least 4ft, but I think 10 ft is the usual distance). Co-phased antennas should greatly increase your transmitting strength forwards and backwards...but...thats it. They are not omni-directional..which is why truckers usually have dual antennas...not SUVs


Edit: wow...fast typers out there... The connection type is kinda pointless, theyre all coax, either BNC connector or plain threaded. You can find both, in both types. And, for all you mounting the CB antennas on spare tire racks, lower body panels, bumpers, etc....you should know the body of the vehicle blocks the radio signal, so that 8ft whip youre swinging from the bumper is really acting like a 4ft antenna on the roof. Just mount it on the roof the 1st time. Unless youre just doing it to look cool with the antenna swinging around...in which case...enjoy it

 

Unless you have a 102" true quarter wave steel whip. Then you look cool and get out there.

You also tend to make fast food drive thru workers nervous.
