Default New dash speakers arent working good, need help.

Got myself some kicker ks46's and they dont seem to be packing much of a punch. I know i had 6" door speakers before, so that may be why i notice a huge difference, along with that, i did have system that was putting out bass.

But even the speakers dont seem to be able to handle very much bass at all. distorted very quick, and barely compares to my door speakers in the blazer. could it be because of their size? or maybe theyre in the dash and the sounds bounces off the windshield to the person?

they are 4x6 speakers btw. ALSO the car currently has a base model pioneer, any chance my JVC would push more power to them?

A good way to get more power to them is installing an amp. Do you only have 2 speakers? Also, I wouldn't expect much from a 4x6, they don't have much surface to produce a whole lot of bass.

I think you're simply expecting too much from a speaker that's just too small. A 4x6 will be VERY limited on its ability to output much bass at all and they're limited on power handling when you turn the bass up to try to make up for the limited output which explains the quick run into distortion. More power will not do anything to help you in this matter IMHO. Dashes make horrible enclosures, 4x6's aren't designed to reproduce bass frequencies and all the power in the world won't change that. You're going to need to install some 6.5's in the doors, add a subwoofer or something to that extent or both to get the bass output you're missing I'm afraid.

You might also wanna add some resistors or "bass blockers" inline on the + leads to the speakers to cut the bass frequencies out totally. You will be able to crank the crap out of them then, and not ruin them or get the distortion. I have 5.25 speakers in the front of my truck with the "bass blockers" on them and they scream voices. The bass comes from the 6.5 in the back and the subs. I listen to alot of metal and my setup works perfectly for what I like to hear. The resistors Im talking about are about 5 bucks at any audio shop, just tell em you want to add them to your small front speakers, they will know what you are talking about. If you use an amp, you can always change the output to HPF to do the same thing, but for deck power use the resistors. I think if you did that, and put some 6x9s in boxes down behind your seat facing upward, you would be very happy with the output, and you wont need an external amp. I see you have a reg cab, so you are very limited on how much electronics you can install in there with not alot of room. Your JVC is probably more powerful yes, but dont ask me, I would say to find yourself a nice Alpine with the black wire harness on the buy/sell pages on craigslist, then go to the audio shop and buy the Alpine deck booster pack for 200 watt RMS output - I put together a pretty sick system for not even 600 bucks if you read through my thread.

True, but you can get the capacitor to install it yourself and have it crossover at the frequency you want it to. Here's a quick chart so you can see the value of capacitor you would buy for the frequency you want to cutoff at.

by frequency

________________________Capacitance uF (microFarad)
Crossover Frequency (Hertz) 8 Ohms__ 4 Ohms__ 2 Ohms
80 ______________________248.44__ 496.88__ 993.75
100
_____________________198.75__ 397.50__ 795.00
120
_____________________165.63__ 331.25__ 662.50
150 _____________________132.50__ 265.00__ 530.00
200 ______________________99.38__ 198.75__ 397.50
280 _____________________ 70.98__ 141.96__ 283.93
400 ______________________49.69___ 99.38__ 198.75
600 ______________________33.13___ 66.25__ 132.50
800 ______________________24.84___ 49.69___ 99.38
1000 _____________________19.88___ 39.75___ 79.50
1200 _____________________16.56___ 33.13___ 66.25
2000 ______________________9.94___ 19.88___ 39.75
4000 ______________________4.97____ 9.94___ 19.88
5000 ______________________3.98____ 7.95___ 15.90
6000 ______________________3.31____ 6.63___ 13.25
8000 ______________________2.48____ 4.97____ 9.94
10000 _____________________1.99____ 3.98____ 7.95
12000 _____________________1.66____ 3.31____ 6.63

Here's the formula if you want to cut off at a different frequency.

Highpass Filter To determine the crossover frequency a certain amount of capacitance will give you, use the formula:

0.159/(C x Rh) = F

Explanation of Terms
C - is the capacitance value (in Farads) - to convert to Farads divide the value shown on the side of the cap in uF by one million.
Rh - is the impedance of the load (speaker) you will be using.
F - is the crossover frequency you will get.

AND, you can get the capacitors from Parts Express HERE easily enough. Also, remember that a bass blocker (which is just a capacitor) rolls off on a shallow 6db per octave slope. That means if you buy a cap to cutoff at 80hz the speaker will likely still audibly play most of your upper bass frequencies which won't help much on the 4x6's.
