Default 1991 Chevy s10 Blazer

Hi. I just bought a 1991 Blazer from a family member, and i want to fix it up and make it have a bit more power than stock. I've had some advice on putting different engines and transmissions in it, but not sure what to go with or how to go about it.
Right now, it's an automatic 2wd with a 4.3l engine in it, and I want to put a 6 speed manual transmission and an engine that can keep up into it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Also, if anyone knows any trusted mechanics or body shops in the Fredericksburg VA area, that would be awesome.

Anyone? Also, what would cause my gears to not change out properly? I have to play with the gas to get it to change out, and the gears have to be pretty high on the RPMs to change out. Is it some kind of sensor, or something like a sticky throttle valve?
