Default Go big or go home!

Well, this is exciting! I've been doing research on solid axle swaps and shopping around for over a year now and finally found the right deal on a Dana 60 front axle! It's gonna be a good while before it goes in but at least its a start.

Cool.

Is that out of a dodge? how much do you know about axles? What's the hump on the passenger side tube, a CAD?

Yes, 95 Dodge 2500 Cummins and yes its a CAD. Thought about deleting it with a one piece shaft but then I had a better idea. Since I have to change gears anyway I'm gonna put a full spool in it and hook up a cable to the disconnect which will give me a selectable front locker for cheap! That will be important for my setup since its gonna be a "road legal" crawler.

A spool with CAD won't really act the same as a selectable locker. Your drivers front tire will always get power when in 4 wd. you would just be engaging or disengaging the passenger tire.

I just wanted to make sure you were aware of the drawbacks of that axle.

I realize that, but that really shouldn't be a problem as far as I can think. When the CAD is engaged the axle will be fully locked and when disengaged should allow for differentiation of the tires when turning which is all you really need.

I think turning left in slippery situations would be a little more interesting but might not be enough to matter. Personally I don't drive around in 4wd normally, so yeah shouldn't really matter I guess.

Default Updates

Santa aka my girlfriend was good to me this year, I got a 42" double stacked LED lightbar! Had to fab up some mounting brackets due to the curve of the roof but I got it on and wired up to my switch panel and it is awesome!

In other news, I am trying to sell my Dodge axle and get one from a Ford. The CAD didn't bother me until I realized that its right in the way of where the leaf springs need to be! Until I get that taken care of the SAS is on hold.

Well that was quick! Someone saw my ad on Saturday and on Sunday we met up and traded axles, I traded him the Dodge axle for a Dana 50 out of a 99 Super Duty. Now back to hunting down all the other parts...

Have you checked the leaf spring measurements on that one? I think they're wider than most people use. Might make spring and shackle mounts a little harder.

What are you planning for rear axle?
