The only thing my son took off was the air pump and the tubing to the exhaust manifolds. I've got him today checking all the wires. Ran fine until he took the air pump off. Got me stumped. I've got a Clymer 67-87 shop manual which is not very good any better ones out there? The positive lead coming off the battery has a heavy gage wire going to the starter and a smaller gage + lead which he said he never took off. It is constantly hot (found that out when I touched it) I can't believe it went to nothing and was just loose. Has a round connection looks to go on a terminal somewhere life of me can't find it any ideas would be appreciated.

depending on how small that 2nd cable is comming off the battery i would make sure your alternator is hooked up!!! there is only 2 wires from factory comming off the battery... 1 the large gauge wire that goes to the starter... and the smaller looking "maybe 8 guage" wire should hook up to the back of your alternator, on the left side..
not having this hooked up will cause electrical issues!!!! as for if there is a power wire already hooked up to the alternator, it sounds like someone else might of done some re-wiring on there. and you mentioned that your son took the smog stuff off.. im pretty sure he had to mess with the alternator to remove it.

hope this helps

It seems my son took the wires off the alternator when he put the headers on, he disconnected the wire from the bat to the alternator and did not remember where it went or taking it off. You are absolutely correct it went to the alternator. After looking closely at the wire connection (I should have done that weeks ago) I could see the impression of a round terminal on one side and a square impression on the other. It dawned on me that if it had not been connected to something it would be uniformly colored. Told my son hook it up to the altenator sure enough it fired right up. The look on my sons face was worth a thousand words. Lesson he learned from this ---if you can't remember where wires go label them with a piece of tape before you take them off. He will learn
Thanks all for your advice

Its great that you and your son resolved the problem. Good job Dad.
Sounds like one of these "remember when" stories. Have a blast with the K5 and your son.
