The O2 sensors have nothing to do with the heater core. Sounds to me like the code may refer to the temp control - or even a fan motor or fan speed switch overheating. When you run the heater, press your hand onto the fan speed switch - and do your best to trace that burning smell. The heater core is front and center in the dash.

It happens that I have a '97 and the two-volume factory service manual (soon to be for sale, I'm trading the car no later than Christmas and won't need the manual after that). Section 1A-2 describes the unit operation - there is reference to a temperature valve that moves toward and away from the heater core to allow more or less cool air to flow through. I'm not sure whether that's the part your code referenced.

What IS the code you got?

Absolutely NOTHING on this HVAC system will set a CEL...you're chasing the wrong animal! Take it to Autozone and have them scan it for you (it's free) then repost with the code number and we can help you out.
