reeeeealllly? thats the 1st time i heard that one..........Is the point not to draw air from as far from the engine as possible......such as bending down by the headlight? and wouldnt the increased time to travel to the engine cool it a little more? and isnt the stock intake rippled, restricting air flow?
If you look, the acordian section of the pipe, is actually a lot larger than the 'restrictions' in the pipe. Actually, the largest restriction in the intake path is the throttle body itself. I did a little analysis of this a long while ago and the throttle body with the stock deflector was the smallest part of the intake. Without the deflector, the pipe at the front of the air box now becomes the smallest point, however, it is designed as a venturi and will flow quite a bit more than a pipe with a diameter equal the smallest diameter in the venturi.
Its all about getting nice, dense air. The cooler the air, the more dense it is. The air being pulled through the radiator can be over 170*F on a hot summer day with the A/C giving its contribution of heat. Draw this air into the intake and you are defeating the purpose.
True, a cone filter may drastically outflow the stock panel filter, but is it necessary? Hmm... If you have an open element cone filter in the engine bay, you are eliminating any gain in flow by sucking in hot air.
