performance questions
ok so my bro took the engine out of k5 today and we started to question if it was a 350 or a 305 dont have calipers does any1 know what the block code would look like for a 350 or a 305? Also we found a damaged piston, cylinder walls, and head the damage is not catastrophic but we will have to get the heads shaved and it cut out some how far is to far what is the good range for going over? but what is weird about that is the valves arent damaged there wasnt anything in the cylinder so i dont know what did it the only thing i could think of was we found a broken piston ring but it was in the wrong cylinder. so ya back to my question whats a good range for cutting over. Its a 4x4 and will be planned for being in the mud alot and probly stuck bad so i dont wanna go to far

well to determine whether its a 350 or a 305, just google chevy small block identification, brings up a ton of stuff

What are the block casting codes (on the top of the bell housing boss behind the oil pressure port) as well as the block stamping codes (on top of the passenger side head deck in front of the passenger side head)?
If you have the heads off and have a decent ruler, a 350 will have a 4.000" bore while the 305 will have a 3.736" bore.
As far as safe decking limits, that is going to be highly head dependent. Some had thicker decks than others. To identify the heads, the casting code should be located under the valve cover.
Post up some pictures of the damage if you can.
