Default programmer vs. programmed ecm

So i want a little more power outa my 4.3 without getting into the internals of the engine. Which is more cost effective, more power, and maybe a little better economy? I like the fact that I can put my blazer back to stock with a programmer with a few button pushes, and it can read codes that come up too.
