Default 1996 Jimmy engine removal

I think my 1996 Jimmy 4x4 4.3L is finally dead. Funny noises from the bottom end (I think). My wife drove it home the other day in "2nd" instead of "drive", and revved the crap out of the motor for about 10 minutes. I'd like to get the engine out to get a look at the damage, but I'm told its a little difficult.

Is it easier to leave the (automatic)tranny in the truck?
Some of the post say I need to lift the body?

Can someone let me know what I'm in for?
What is the easiest way? About how much time does it take?

Any guesses on whats wrong?
runs, but knocks under load, very low oil pressure, no smoke, no leaks, oil looks clean, coolant looks clean.
