Since I started this thread 4 years ago I thought I would provide an update. Now my 1996 Blazer has 246,000 miles on it and the engine still has not been rebuilt. I do have leaking timing cover gasket that needs to be replaced soon. I am leaking about a quart of oil between oil changes. I am trying to decide whether to fix this or simply keep it going a little longer and then rebuilding the engine. Anyone have an opinion? Should I spend the time and effort to replace the timing chain cover, or just wait and rebuild the engine?

LOL
Getting a kick out of this thread. I'm a Ford guy and I did my homework before I bought my Bravadiva.
Aint a damned thing wrong with 4.3 Longblocks.
Guarantee if they run good and quiet at 100K, then with good maintenance and paying attention, no reason they cant go 500K.
That is if you use a Good Synthetic. Talk about timing chains.. that's where really GOOD lube makes a big difference. Second point.. cam lobes.

We picked up a 1998 S10 a few weeks ago with 524K actual miles. The seller put the last 300K on it as the wide load flagging truck for moving mobile homes long distances at 70 MPH on interstates.
A valve started sticking on the way home in it and finally stuck open. I found another engine with 119K miles and will replace the old one. With care I could have make it longer. 700-800K miles are the records that hear about. Most just are not going to be driving 10 hours a day 6 days a week to put 1/2 million miles on a 4.3 GM engine.
I know with 3k oil changes and regular service the long block can be good for 500,000+ miles.
