I didn't read your whole post, however I got past the jist of it.
Don't waste your time and money on a 700R4. Not only will it cost more it won't be any better. The 4L60E is a 700R4 except the 4L60E is electronicaly controlled. To convert back to a 700R4 you will have to fix your puter, install a TCC device, and find a way to install a TV cable backet to your trottle linkage.
If money is tight, and generally it is for most around the holidays. Call several local salvage yards. Around here its about $500 for a used tranny, and most places offer a 30 day warrenty. The thing about trannies is they either work or don't. When you drop it in add a quart of Lucas Tranny treatment in place of one quart of tranny fluid. Dont botter replacing the filter or draining the old fluid out. Replace the input seal (get the double liped version) and replace the tranny dipstick tube gasket. If this is a 2wdr replace the output seal too, again double lipped. The good part is the 4L60E was offered in a bazillion GM rear wheel drive vehicles. Replacements are everywhere. Hell, with the way the economy is right now it might actually be cheaper to have your rebuilt. Call around to some local independant tranny shops and get a quote.
