I heard a rumor that someone could adapt mid to late 90's 5.7L Vortec heads to an older 5.7L block from late 80's to early 90's with TBI. Is this possible? Are there any substantial gains doing this? Or is this a can of worms I shouldn't even ponder on?

Sure can. It adds on 30-40 hp and are decent heads for the buck. You have to buy a vortec manifold though as tbi manifolds wont bolt up. Dont go the junk yard route, vortec heads are bad for cracking, its hard to find a good set. Buy a set of reman'd or new ones unless you have time to gamble.

I may have access to a 99 Tahoe that a friend is parting out. We' ll see.
So I'd have to swap the intake manifold too? Would the TBI bolt on to the vortec intake? Is an adapter necessary?
Is there a step by step write up on this forum?

you can buy the manifolds with the vortec bolt style, with trbi, but they are 300 bucks or more. Or go this route. Get this manifold for 125,then this adapter for 60. Done.
