My 83 K5 with a 700r4 slams/bangs into gear at idle. It has been sitting for 5 years, but fired right up and other than the hard shifts, it seems to drive fine.
Ideas?

First thing I would look at is excessive driveline play. Bad motor, transmission mounts will also give you those symptoms. Check the TV pressure cable for smooth movement through the full travel of the throttle arm.
