Default Neutral safety switch

How do you know when the neutral safety switch goes bad

If you KNOW the starting system is good, yet will still not turn over or hear the solenoid clicking in park, that's a pretty good indication of a faulty neutral safety switch.

Try putting the vehicle in neutral and starting it. If it starts then it is not the switch but something else...normally.

1) Is everything completely dead when you try to start it or do you here the solenoid click or the starter start to engage but will not turn the engine?

2) What is the system voltage at rest and what happens to the system voltage when you turn the key? What happens to the headlights?

3) What is the voltage measured on the big power cable right at the starter at rest and when trying to start?

4) What is the voltage measured right at the starter for the solenoid signal when trying to start?

5) Are there any loose or corroded connections at the battery, large starter cables, or grouns cables?

I don't know the starter circuit on your year so I don't know the relay and solenoid circuit. Maybe someone else can chime in if this does not get you going.

the lights stay on but there's no click from anything when I turn the key but I can start it up if I put a flat head on the starter
