air pump

I would like to know what exactly an air pump/smog pump does and if I can drive 2000 miles with out one.

would you get any performance gains out of it? and how would i modify the PCM if i did this.

so can i drive 2000 miles without having to worry about anything messing up?

AIR == air injection reaction. It is an emissions system that is supposed to boost the efficiency and life expectancy of the catalytic converter by injecting fresh air into the exhaust before the catalytic converter. To remove this system, you must have your PCM modified to remove the AIR system DTCs.

Performance gains, according to the above, NONE.
To modify the PCM, you would need to take it to a dealer that has a Tech2 programmer.

Only your cat converter. Which runs several hundred dollars and can have an effect on your O2 sensors causing your CEL to come on.

then what would be the benefits of removing the AIR pump?
