Default Bell Housing Plugs

So, I've only ever seen these on an existing Blazer once. Are they important to keep dirt and mud out of the bell housing?

GM part number 12554466 (takes two)

I had them on mine before I switched to a manual transmission. I can't imagine it could be a problem if they aren't there. At least if water gets in, it can get back out again without them.
