Default blazer engine trans swap 1998

Hey yall, new to the forum as i just got my first blazer. picked this truck up for about 300 bucks due to it having blown engine which i plan on getting from a local salvage yard. my question is and hopefully yall dont mind me asking but.
1> what year trucks will have direct drop in motors with no mod needed?
2> is it possible while im at the salvage yard to get a manual trans and toss it in with the engine? this is a 4x4 4.3. currently has an auto. i know it will need a new computer from the donor, i am not sure if the 1998 will need to be reprogramed <can anyone help me on this one>? thanks in advance. not sure if there are other post like this if so just pm me and delete this tread. thanks

Yeah... 95 - 2002 (early year because mid year they had a non EGR engine in 2002's)
& search will be bountyfull with this. Most 95's can be replaced with any 4.3 till 2001 & some 2002's as I said.
As for the auto to manual... that's more involved & yes.... search! It's covered & have a few drinks of choice nearby, sit back, copy n paste & read on!

ok iv been trying the search function with little success. keeps giving me errors
just a quick question.. from what iv come on google is that a 4 door 4x4 manual is hard to find?
fast quick question. NV3500.. this all the stuff that goes with it . pcm reflash. and some wiring change for reverse. with bolt on xfer case. is that all i need? thanks

1996 would be the first year that would direct swap with the exception of the oil pan which would have to be swapped (same for 97's as well). Rotti is correct on the mid-02 change over. However, the 95 motor is completely different and cannot be swapped. To use a mid-02 or newer motor, you would have to reuse you lower intake manifold as well as drill & tap the back of the block for the older knock sensor (npt tap).

If you are asking about a motor that bolts in, a manual transmission swap isn't going to just bolt in... There are a number of odds & ends that you're going to need along with finding someone to reprogram the pcm for manual operation. To do it right, the clusters should be swapped as well. Things are complicated on the newer vehicles.

GM never put a manual transmission into a 2nd generation 4dr. They aren't hard to find, they don't exist outside of swaps.

Hello out there,anyone help out,appriceate it,I have a 97 in similar situation as scott 550 ,engine swap.I,ve searched and came up with,only engines compatable with 97 fit are the 96 97 and 98 without any modification other than the oil pan on 96 and 98,is that correct ? I don,t know why an interchange chart for these motors is so hard to find.Thanks for any help,Jim

could someone please help figure out how to send my own post, i can't seem to figure it out. or if someone could just help me out here, that would be great. i have a 1998 blazer with a blown motor and i was planning on dropping a motor from a 1995 into it, can i do this? if it won't drop in without mods, what mods need to be done?

Trying to use a 95 engine unless its the sfi is a colassal waste of time and effort.To many changes in the wiring to make it work.go with 96 -98 and it will work fine.

Thanks 1sttimejimmieowner, I settled for a 96 , 2wd so apparently had to change out the oil pan ,I noticed that the oil pump was identical to the 97 4x4 pump,except for the pickup ,tube filter , 4x4 pan being deeper ,the pick up tube is made longer. everything else is identical re: wiring ,etc hookups, bigest pain was that one tranny bolt ,drivers side top,I got it with 9/16 box end , a tip ,beat in that fire wall ,where that bolt mates up to tranny ,to give ya the wee extra room needed, thatnks for everything

I should add that ,the remote oil filter had to be swapped from 2wd , to 4wd ,there is a gasket that has to come out from the 2wd unit,it is inner to the top on the block ,scrape it clean to the steel, so that the remote unit will fit snug to the block, steel to steel as it comes from factory,of course you'll still keep the o-ring on sending unit in place ,just not the gasket on the block,that's only for the 2wd ,local oil filter,everything else is the same on this 96 motor taken from a 2wd s10 and fitted to 4x4 blazer, both motors are the same 96 & 97 ,you are safe with 98 also,other years I'am not able to confirm ,wiring connects anr different ,I heard and of course the 95 is not compatiable to anything beyond that year , it being 1st generation ,the 2nd generation series 96 onward .

you can get 96-98 as a drop in, 99-mid 02 you'll need metric bolts for the bell housing,starter,and motor mounts. 02 and up you'll need your lower intake manifold and the drill/tap for the knock sensor. be sure to replace the lower intake gaskets and rear main seal while you have the engine out.
sorry, just noticed he already replaced the engine
