to buy or not to buy
Hi everyone,
i have the option to buy a 2001 GMC jimmy with 101,290 on the clock for under 500$, but its got a bad engine. it was driven to the spot its in so i know its not totally gone, but my question is would it be worth re-building or replacing? im only 17, but i know a hell of a lot about cars (expically blazers/jimmy's). its a 4X4 SLT model, its clean like you would not believe!! 0 rust and only one dent!! i know right? a blazer/jimmy with no rust!!
So, do you guys think i should buy it? All it's doing now is sitting and has been sitting for about 5 months now. I love the blazer/jimmy/bravada and i know all the problems (family has owned nothing but blazers and jimmys). Personalty I want to buy the truck right now, but I need a more professional opinion, like i said, its really clean. I don't know what is wrong with the engine, i'm assuming the head gaskets are gone or the bottom end is bad (knocking). keep in mind, i'm 17, BUT i have done countless numbers of engine swaps (ford & Chrysler)
thanks for looking at my long, and kinda off topic thread. haha any help is appreciated!!

In my opinion it's a win win for you. If you have the knowledge to rebuild or swap engines then doing it yourself would save thousands. You could find anything you want for those models in any junkyard. I see 4.3s everywhere. Or you could do a complete rebuild for under $ and still only have $1500 in it. In a matter of opinion if you have the know how and it's what you want then that's your decision. But I promise parts for the second gens are everywhere pretty cheap

I forgot to add I put a vortec 4.3 in my 89 back in 2008. Didn't have the money for a crate throttle body and couldn't find one in a junkyard so I upgraded. It came out of a Astro van and had like 60k miles on it. I bought and installed it for less then $900 and it's still running strong today.
