Can you run without the front drive shaft? 1998 4x4

My brother had removed it a month or so ago now I have some odd noise on start up coming from the front dif.

If it sits and idles I do not get it, but if I drive it right away it sounds like gears are trying to line up, they do after a few seconds then no more noise.

It would need to sit a bit, say 3 - 4 hours before it does it again.

ANY IDEAS?

Brian
