drain plug shot...

Default drain plug shot...

So went to change my oil the other day and I had no idea I had the wrong size bit (16mm instead of the 15mm) and I went and torqued on it and stripped the bolt, its like a perfect circle now... and I got a boo-boo on my hand... Whats the best way to get it off now? and also what is the size of theplug itself so I can go out and get a replacement before I remove the old one? thanks

The plug is an M12x1.75 ~30mm long. You can pick up a regular replacement for a few bucks at your favorite autoparts store. It's a bit more for a magnetic one, but I'd spring for one...

*EDIT* - whoops.. Forgot about how to remove it.. Well, you could attempt to put a set of vise-grips onto it, or get yourself the Craftsman Bolt-Out set. The vise-grips are by far cheaper, but if you can't get it with that, you won't have a problem with the bolt out.

well, if you get to a dead end and give up, make someone else do it.. instead of your 20$ oil change, go get it changedfor like25$and they will charge you like5$ for a new drain plug, or you could bring your own and make them install it.. and when its time for next oil change, no more stripped head!

small pipe wrench will do wonders on getting it off.

Kyle is right... I don't know how many bolts that I've rounded off that I couldn't get out with vise grips.

Iwent a little more extreme when i rounded mine. Took a die grinder and made 2 flat sides on it and got a wrench on it and it came out just fine.

Yea i'm with RCars2. If all else fails grind it - you can also grind a notch in the middle and take it out with a big flathead screwdriver. just dont take a blowtochr to it to heat and loosen it.
