Default drain plug shot...

So went to change my oil the other day and I had no idea I had the wrong size bit (16mm instead of the 15mm) and I went and torqued on it and stripped the bolt, its like a perfect circle now... and I got a boo-boo on my hand... Whats the best way to get it off now? and also what is the size of theplug itself so I can go out and get a replacement before I remove the old one? thanks

The plug is an M12x1.75 ~30mm long. You can pick up a regular replacement for a few bucks at your favorite autoparts store. It's a bit more for a magnetic one, but I'd spring for one...

*EDIT* - whoops.. Forgot about how to remove it.. Well, you could attempt to put a set of vise-grips onto it, or get yourself the Craftsman Bolt-Out set. The vise-grips are by far cheaper, but if you can't get it with that, you won't have a problem with the bolt out.

well, if you get to a dead end and give up, make someone else do it.. instead of your 20$ oil change, go get it changedfor like25$and they will charge you like5$ for a new drain plug, or you could bring your own and make them install it.. and when its time for next oil change, no more stripped head!

Kyle is right... I don't know how many bolts that I've rounded off that I couldn't get out with vise grips.

Iwent a little more extreme when i rounded mine. Took a die grinder and made 2 flat sides on it and got a wrench on it and it came out just fine.

Yea i'm with RCars2. If all else fails grind it - you can also grind a notch in the middle and take it out with a big flathead screwdriver. just dont take a blowtochr to it to heat and loosen it.
