Default engine disturbed distributor installation

My son's 2000 Blazer ran fine yesterday but this morning would not fire up. It cranked fine and would flutter and die. We checked and had spark and tried starter fluid but it was the same. Pulled cap on distributor and found rotor would turn quite a bit of slack so pulled distributor and found damaged teeth of gear. bought a new one and put it in but somehow must have disturbed the engine because we can't get it to start. thought it was 180 out so turned it around but still no start. We are stumped....help

personally i find rotating the pully to line up top dead center the easiest way to line it all up my 2002 blazer has 2 marks one will be top dead center the other isn't fairly easy, and make sure there is lock tight on those distributer screws or they could back off enough to lose them this i learned the hard way
