Default Engine ran bad then died and now will not start

This is on a 2001 Blazer with Vortec 4.3L

About to tear into this one on Monday. Was just out there getting codes and looking at distributor and stuff but don't have time today to try and get into tearing down the engine looking for issues. SO hear is the story....
I drove the Blazer to about 40 miles this morning to a garage/book sale. Found some really good books for $1.00 each, hard back too. On my way home I maybe put in about 15 miles and out of nowhere the engine started running very rough and causing the whole vehicle to vibrate. I pulled into a gas station to see if there was something visibly wrong but when I came to a stop the engine died. Didn't see anything out of the ordinary. Had to floor the gas to get it to crank back up. Got it home, barely, and then pulled out my OBD reader to see what happened. The only code I get is P0107 which is nothing new. I have had that code on there for some time now and just have not really spent much time trying to find out why.
Now I can't even get the engine to start. When I turn the key I get some backfires and then the engine will jump and bang around sometimes but it never starts.

Checked under the distributor cap and it looks OK. My worry is that I tossed a rod. Any ideas, areas to look at, any suggestions at all? Will be going at it Monday and hoping to have some idea where to start my disassembly.
Still have this feeling that I am totallly hosed on this one. ENGINE REBUILD is what I am thinking. Oh so hope not to have to go there.

It could be a number of things, I would check the timing first. If your engine threw a rod, you would have heard clanging, banging and knocking, possibly a hole knocked in the block with oil draining out.

Have you tested fuel pressure & leak down (see fuel system diagnosis in my signature)?

could be a crank sensor
also when u get it running that code could be caused by a vacuum leak

Checked the fuel system diagnosis and the low fuel pressure info was pretty accurate for what my Blazer has been doing. Ran to the auto store this morning and picked up a fuel pressure test kit and what I found out is that when the key is turned on the pressure goes right on up to 60 psi but once the pump turns off the pressure quickly begins to drop until it gets down to nothing. My guess here is FPR?
Going back outside to see if I can determine anything on that end. Will be back inside looking at threads if I can't figure this out by looking.

If you are getting 60psi then it will run on that amount of fuel pressure. Not to say that the regulator isn't bad... I think it would still run but just start rough.
If you put some gas down the throttle body (and then replace the air duct) will it start for a second or two?

Anyone want to buy a 2001 Blazer? Seriously, this thing is going to be the death of me.
Checked out the DIY article on FPR removal and replacement and for my 95 Blazer it is perfect but for this one not so much. I can't see the FPR without removing the intake and I hate to do that if the FPR is not the problem. Looking at my intake I am going to have to remove allot of stuff just to get it off which is fine if replacing the FPR is going to fix it. If it doesn't then that was a big waste of time and money.

Bandidolenny, I would give that a try just to see what happens but I started taking stuff apart. Debaiting now if I should continue getting the intake off or put it all back together and throw a for sale sign on it.
My 95 gave me little problems but this 01 is something all the time.

Well I have tossed in the towel.
I hate working on this vehicle to begin with because of all the junk stuck to the engine but just to take the intake off is going to require removing a bunch of stuff, some of which I don't know what it is or why it is even attached to the intake. I was looking at how to remove the fuel lines from the intake and found that I would have to unfasten them down almost between the engine and firewall. I have large hands, there is not allot of room down in this area, the mounting bracket is in the way too. This is becomeing more of a pain in the rear than I had hoped for and still don't know for sure this will fix the problem. So that is it. I am going back outside to push it close to the road and slapping a for sale on it.
Already told my wife that the next vehicle she gets will be built before 1985 so I can fix it without spending hours searching for information and guessing as to what the problem could be.

You could remove the throttle body and use a mechanics mirror to look for leaks off of the FPR or wetness at the back of the intake plenum.

Or, you could continue with the diagnosis and connect the fuel pressure gauge at the fuel filter to effectively isolate the fuel pump to see if it isn't something with the pump.

But if you really want it gone, I'll give you $500 for the truck, problems unknown.

OK after taking a few days to simmer down and having a wife nagging about getting her Blazer back on the road I took the time today to drain the oil and see if it is something internal. Guess what, it apparently is. There are fine metal particals all in the oil. Not 100% sure but it looked like right as I pulled the plug I had water w/antifreeze come out initialy. I am still wanting to get rid of this vehicle and buy something pre 1982 with a good old fashion carberator and no computer controlling the engine. My wife on the other hand loves the bells and whistles of newer vehicles and this Blazer is fully loaded with them (more wires and garbage under the hood). So now it is up to several debates and probably some yelling before we will figure out the fate of this Blazer.
I don't have a shop, garage, carport or even a concrete drive. This is my major objection to pulling and rebuilding an engine. Done it several times and it always sucked due to rain, heat, fire ants, other insects, dirt in the engine, etc. I have wished for a shop for over 20 years and still no shop, but that is part of being poor and I have somewhat learned to live with that.
Anyways, thanks for all your help and I still love this forum. Keep up the good work guys.
