You can use from a 1996 up to a 2004 motor, but for 2001 and up you will need to adapt your knock sensor mounting in the block to the old style, using an adapter. The threaded hole is different size. You cannot use the late style knock sensor, so don't even think about it! Also, you may need to use your intake and exhaust manifolds on a later motor. Otherwise no problem.

It will fit if you need to use it. If it is from a 2WD going into 4WD, be aware that sumps (pickup tubes) are also different. It's no bother.

well hells bells.....i ordered a 2000 4.3 vin w for my 98 blazer vin w and they said that a 2000 4.3 would only work in a 2000 model year....this company has a reman service on site and the block numbers are different and show only compatible for 2000 model blazers, astros, bravada, etc. they will not sell me the engine, so im back to where i started still saying what to do...whats the difference in the blocks that will cause it not to work?? somebody shoot me,,,please.

AFAIK there is no difference in the blocks that will cause a 2000 engine to not work in a 1998. Who cares which type of rockers it has. Makes no functional difference. As I said, you may need to use your exhaust and intake manifolds from your 1998. Only difference in the block throughout these years I am aware of is the knock sensor mounting hole size changed. I suppose there could be a partial year changeover of the knock sensor in 2000 or 2001. All you need to do is identify which knock sensor is on the engine. You need one with a single wire connector.

Look at GM Goodwrench replacement engines

12491865 goes into 1996-1998 (Ball pivot rockers and single wire knock sensor)
12491867 goes into 1999-2000 (roller rockers and single wire knock sensor)
12491869 goes into 2001-2002 (roller rockers and 2-wire knock sensor)

Have you considered one of these? 3 year/100K warranty. GM Goodwrench Rebuilts. I haveone - about 50K so far. From Jegs = no core, free shipping. They even give you both sumps and the front timing cover.

early knock sensor 1996-2000

later knock sensor 2001+

These mount in the top of block near the distributor hole.

Almost forgot to tell you. No matter what you buy, make sure to replace the radiator (oil cooler) and flush out the oil cooler lines and oil filter adapter. You don't want any metal from the old engine oil getting into your new one.

I changed the thread topic to an appropriate title so others can understand what is being discussed in this thread and closed the other one that you started. No sense in someone else repeating the same info in another thread. You should be able to edit titles as well, under edit/advanced for the first post.
