Default Evacuate trans fluid through filler tube?

Ok so I've ordered the shift solenoids, the filter, and the pan gasket. I'm going to be on my back underneath this thing. I would rather not take a bath in trans fluid if I can help it. I'm wondering if it's possible to evacuate the fluid through the filler neck. Seems like it would work. Anyone done this?

I used to put a small hole in the pan and then braze it up afterwards , no mess at all.

I was considering pulling a pan from the boneyard and making a drain hole in it. Then just swap it out when I do the service.
