Every now and again my speedo sticks at zero and it feels like the car won’t shift out of first, after a few seconds the speedo will kick in and the tranny will change gears. I have a friend that said it could be a VSS issue or a tranny issue. Has anyone had anything similar happen to them? I couldn’t find anything quite the same in other topics that I read through, I apologize if this is a repeat. It has been doing this for a few months but usually it’s once every couple weeks and the last week or so it’s been happening every other day so I don’t want to make anything worse than it is.
Does anyone know the cost of getting a VSS replaced? I’m not so mechanically inclined so I’ll be taking it somewhere to get fixed but I don’t want to replace it if it’s an obv. Transmission issue. I’m at 177k kms approx.
Any advice is GREATLY appreciated J

The VSS is cheap and very easy to change. It can easily be done with only a wrench and a bit of time.
Your symptoms suggest that the vss and/or its wiring are/is at fault.
