Help...need year of transmission.

Help...need year of transmission.
A friend of mine recently purchased a vehicle with what he believes to be a 700R4 transmission bolted up to a 350 double hump engine. He assumes this transmission is a 700R4 because it's a pre-electric shift transmission and has no modulator valve, and also has a cable-driven speedometer. The question is, how might we find out the year of the transmission so he can purchase a rebuild kit that will work?
Neither one of us are 100% about this transmission even being a 700r4, it's just what we've been told. Anyone know?

RE: Help...need year of transmission.
I would assume it is an overdrive Transmission, it does have 4 forward gears? If so it has to be either a 700r4 or a 2004r The easiest way to distinguish them is simply look at the tailshaft housing, (the very back of the trans case where the drive shaft goes in) if it unbolts from the main transmission case (there will be 4 bolts around the perimiter) it is a 700r4....if it is all one piece it is a 2004r. Once you determine the model of transmission it really doesn't matter much about the year...the only difference in any of the 700r4's is that in 1986 they added an auxillary valve body, but I think all the kits are the same anyway. Same for the 2004r, they are all interchangeable IIRC. That's not to say that the 2004r and the 700r4 are the same, they are very different.

For pics for either of those trannies, do a websearch.
Search for 700R4 Raptor and you will get pics of every possible part in a 700R4.
