I'm stumped
#1
I bought a '04 a few months ago. The other day I was putting the vehicle in park, and the shift lever, on the coloum, went into park, but the indicator on the dash still said "D", and it was not lying.
The shift lever is extremely loose, and will not go into any other gear. I was able to turn the truck off, and pull the key out. My wife and I pushed it out of the way of general traffic. I'm no mechanic, but is it a broken shifter cable? And is it something that a guy can fix in a parking lot?
I made a mistake, it is an 2001, not an '04....

More than likely the cable end or the pivot broke at the transmission shift arm. I actually had this happen a couple weeks ago on my father in-laws 03 zr2. We just ground the remaining part of the pivot stud off and replaced it with a bolt using 2 nuts to sandwich the plate. The repair only took about 20 minutes in total.
