intake gasket question

What is usually the very first sign of a bad lower intake gasket or head gasket?

Several signs.
Missing coolant
coolant on top of the engine by valve covers ( mine did this)
Coolant in oil or vice versa
over heating
I think that covers the most common ones

Also white smoke and the smell of coolant in the exhaust.

Exhaust pipe leaves a fine residue of oily crap on the rear quarter panel.
Right rear brake caliper looks like it's leaking and you replace it twice, and it still appears to be leaking.
Motor oil looks weird when you drain it.
Mysterious dripping under vehicle that can be traced to the area of the lower intake manifold.
Gurgling/running water sound inside the cab upon acceleration.
Noticeable drop in coolant level in the radiator.

That about covers it for my experiences.

Thanks, as I just bought my 94 s10 and it has 165,000. I notice none of the above at all, but also know this is an extremely common problem with these vehicles. i do not know if it was replaced by previous owners
