My 96 had this problem when I bought it a year ago. I ended up breaking the nipples off of the fuel pump when I dropped the tank last fall. Well I pulled the pump out and replaced it with a AC/Delco pump. Problem fixed. The one it had in it was an Airtex pump. Also the GM pump had rubber pieces on the bottom to control noise. The Airtex did not. Also when I changed out the pump it fixed my gas gauge issue of reading full for 200 miles then dropping to empty. It's nice to have a gas gauge that works.
