Default Oil Leak Valve Cover 2.2

I searched the forum and did not see a post about my issue. I bought a pretty worn 2001 S10 with 2.2 engine. On a long drive, you can smell oil burning and I believe the valve cover / gasket is leaking. It appears that the valve cover is made from a type of fiber/plastic rather than metal. It has a lot of "goop" around the bottom of the valve cover and I wanted to ask someone in the know before I cleaned it off and replaced the gasket in case the fiber is broken and I need to replace the cover. Anyone have experience with this or any comments? Thanks.
