Default pull heads while intake is off??

ok here we go...
i just got my intake gasket kit from rock auto...went with the best fel-pro kit.

it just occurred to me to do the head gaskets as well...i mean i am more then half way there...right??

but i have no symptoms that would lead me to believe they are in trouble...
some history for you....

  • engine has 230k +/- on it.
  • intake is leaking coolant from "valley" around valve cover and front of engine on passenger side.
  • plugs are clean and dry...fluids have not mixed...green is green and oil is well oil.
  • when i throttle up with rad cap off the engine will take in coolant..no bubbles, forcing out fluid, or discoloration.

sooo with all that in mind, is it worth the effort?
i see gaskets are not pricey and honestly i have the blazer laid up till fall anyway...front diff needs some tlc too.

just want to see if there is any payoff in doing the little extra.
also if anyone has some hints/tips.
and what kit is recommended for the heads.
i am sure i know the answer (well yes ) but i like to ask someone who
"has been there...done that"

thanks guys

Been there done that.....If its going to bug you that you didnt do it...then do it. But on the other hand, why fix something that isnt broke. Im male, I dont like to do work I dont need to do. I have stripped an engine down just because i felt like it and took forever to put it back together.

If you wont have a guilty conscience, and it doesnt show symptoms of needing it, I wouldnt.

Just my opinioin

Warthogdriver,
My wife’s Blazer had an intake leak that let coolant go into the oil. After the hassle of removing the intake, I removed the heads also. I was glad that I did, because the head gaskets showed some deterioration , and carbon build up on the pistons and head can be removed easily now. Still, it is like Kristoph30 said the peace of mind is worth considering in this situation. It is a long way back to this point, and the peace of mind to me was worth pulling the heads. Good luck, Bob Poteete

I am not sure about the head bolts in your engine, but a lot of newer engines require new head bolts because they stretch when you tighten them. It takes a special stretch gage to torgue then.
