Ok I'm updating my stock 305 to a chevy 406 it should be pushing around 450 to 500 lb. Of torque and 400 to 450hp. Also getting a tic Auto 4 speed trans rated to 600hp. I'm stuck on what to do with the Axels their are gm 10 bolt. I would like to get some 1 ton but I'm running out of cash. My question is if I stick with the 10 bolts and update them gears locker exc. Will they last or should I save some more money to get the one ton's or 3/4 tons.
Thanks.

The truck will be used for mud and sand and some rocks. Any thoughts will be appreciated.

i think mud they will be fine depending on what sized tires. i ran my 10 bolts under a suburban with a 400ci, 38 inch tires that weighed 6000lbs. and they are under their 4th truck at the moment. if you just gun it up a rock ledge they will probably snap but behave (which i know you not gonna do putting that engine in there) and they will last.

another factor i believe to make a difference is what gear ratio you have in the axle. if you go with a lower gear ratio like a 4.56 where the teeth are smaller youre gonna have a better chance of blowing them up then if you have like a 373

yeah itll be driveable. just a bit under geared which your hp should make up for. it just causes a little bit of strain on the trans running crappy gears. best thing about 10 bolts is parts are everywhere too
