Default shifter issue

ok so i posted once with not allot of details so here i go round two i have a 97 blazer s10 it has a automantic floor shifter when i put it into reverse i can barrly touch it and send it into first i can also push it all the way up into reverse that should not happen it should lock while in neutral so it wont shift into reverse when i took apart the center and looked at the internals of the shifter me and my father found this white tab at the base it seemed to do nothing it looks like its conected to what seems to be a neutral safty switch? i have been a long time ford driver and figured after my last ford **** out on me that i would try the all famus general motors so far im not impressed but im hoping someone can help me with this and maybe i can gain some respect for chevy
